American College of Radiation Oncology (ACRO)

American College of Radiation Oncology (ACRO) developed a practice accreditation program in 1995 consisting of practice standards for radiation oncology. Accreditation is a voluntary process in which professional peers identify standards indicative of a quality practice and an audit is conducted to assure that these standards are followed.

American College of Radiology (ACR)

Since 1987, the American College of Radiology (ACR) has accredited more than 20,000 facilities, including more than 10,000 practices in ten different imaging modalities. The ACR offers programs in all modalities now mandated for accreditation under the Medicare Improvements for Patients and Providers Act (MIPPA) (CT, MRI, breast MRI, nuclear medicine and PET) as well as under the Mammography Quality Standards Act (MQSA).

Blue Distinction®

Blue Distinction is a designation given by Blue Cross and Blue Shield (BCBS) companies to hospitals that have demonstrated expertise in the delivery of quality health care for complex and rare cancers. The designation is based on rigorous, clinically meaningful selection criteria established in collaboration with expert physicians’ and medical organizations’ input. The distinction recognizes programs that have demonstrated better overall outcomes (e.g., fewer medical complications, fewer readmissions and higher survival rates) in the delivery of specialty care.

NCI Community Cancer Centers Program (NCCCP)

In 2007, the NCI provided funding to 16 community cancer centers at hospitals around the country for a pilot program called the NCI Community Cancer Centers Program (NCCCP). The pilot was designed to build a community-based research platform to support a wide range of basic, clinical, and population-based research on cancer prevention, screening, diagnosis, treatment, survivorship and palliative care at community hospitals – contributing to enhanced quality of care for patients and advancing cancer research. In 2010, the pilot was expanded to 30 community cancer centers in 22 states.
